Why Trends Suck And Style Is Forever

“I believe one can live many lives through personal style. Every day is an occasion to reinvent yourself”

Ralph Lauren

How many times have you told yourself that you won’t buy into trends but then you see something all over the magazines and the internet and before you know it you’ve totally bought into it. I’ve done it myself many times. Far too often I’m late to the party as well so items I could have worn a few times I’ve only worn once before they go off to the charity shop.

It’s all too easy to get carried away and play dress up but it’s important to retain a sense of style. Last Winter I bought into the whole street style trend. Oversize clothes, ugly boots, bobble hats that made me look like Brian from East 17. It’s nice to have fun with fashion but not when the clothes wear you as opposed to you wearing the clothes.

Trends are there to make you feel like you should keep buying. Buying into the latest thing is one thing that frustrates me about the fashion industry. They talk about sustainability but at the same time they want you to buy more. It’s up to you as the consumer to make informed choices.

Time and again I’m drawn back to the lifestyle brand of Ralph Lauren and I don’t mean in a sense that everyone has to buy expensive clothes but looking back at his collections, clothes he was designing in the eighties and nineties could be worn today and that’s the true sign of something classic.

I love the way he layers different fabrics, different styles and it all just comes together. So this Autumn Winter I’m bearing this in mind and am going to work on my layering technique. As well as doing some thrifting for some items, I’m going to work with a lot of what’s in my wardrobe. Join me on a voyage of discovery as I learn about how to mix style and fabrics into something truly unique and stylish.
