We moved into our house just over six years ago and we were the first people to move in. From the first moment we came to view the house it had such a lovely warm feel and it was lovely and light. However it’s taken us quite a while to add some character to our new build home.
Before we moved in we thought it wise to get some flooring put down so that we didn’t have any more upheaval once we’d moved in. For the living room we chose some light coloured laminate that we could afford at the time and as with all new build homes everything was painted magnolia with white ceilings.
After having lived in the house for a few years we decided we needed to make some gradual changes. First up we added some coving to the living room. We went for a plain, medium width coving to get away from the feeling of being in a ‘box’ and along with that was a paint job. We chose Farrow & Ball Cornforth White.
We already had a brown leather 3 seater sofa (DFS) and a rather large snuggle chair which kind of fit in the corner. We also invested in a nest of tables in mango wood along with a bookcase and TV stand in the same wood.
The room is a somewhat awkward layout. It’s an oblong but because we are a middle house the windows are at the front with a set of french windows leading into the garden at the rear. Without any focal point in the room it was difficult to decide how to get the best use of space and layout the furniture. The radiators are also in random places!
We decided to start from scratch and get some new flooring put in. We chose some engineered wood in a limed oak effect which immediately transformed the room. Then we had our wonderful Rais wood burning stove put in by the fantastic North Mill Stoves. This goes beautifully in the corner and provides the perfect focal point for the room.
We got rid of our oversized armchair and got a new two seater sofa from DFS. This one is from the Country Living range and not only is there now more places to seat but it’s extremely comfortable and provides a nice contrast to the existing leather sofa.
I think accessories make the difference between a house and a home and so we ordered a new lamp table from The Cotswold Company. Our colour scheme is grey and yellow with the brown of the wood and leather.
